Design & Build an Accessible Website

New Graphic designs and builds websites following the latest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). But we go beyond conforming to accessibility standards. We help clients to create sites and services that are successful, impactful and accessible for people of all abilities.

Below is some of our that showcase best practice in design, usability and accessibility:

Údarás na Gaeltachta Social Enterprise

Údarás na Gaeltachta chose New Graphic to build their new Social Enterprise website. The Údarás are the agency responsible for the economic, social and cultural development of Irish-speaking regions of Ireland, and accessibility was a vital element of the design.

There are several areas which the site excels in accessibility:

The website is fully bilingual with alt text for images provided in both Irish and English.

A ‘skip to content’ link is included on all pages allowing users to bypass the navigation menu and go straight to the main content of the page. This makes it more efficient for users who rely on keyboard navigation and assistive technologies.

An audio-visual text transcript has been provided as an alternate to the video. This makes it accessible for a broader range of users such as those with visual limitation, deaf or hard of hearing, or deaf-blind.

The site is fully accessible by keyboard, all interactive elements contain keyboard focus states and proper tab order structure.

The site is image-rich, with bespoke image modules curated for each case study. This benefits people who have difficulty reading text as they have information conveyed in other formats.

We partnered with IA Labs who tested and audited the site against every WCAG 2.1 guideline. We implemented their findings and recommendations and tested the site again to verify conformance.

As a result of our work this website was a finalist in the Permanent TSB Digital Business Ireland Awards for the ‘Excellence in Digital Accessibility Category’.

IMMA 2021 Annual Report

We have been working on IMMA’s Annual Report for the last few years. Instead of a PDF, this year we explored a new approach of making it accessible for all and easier to use and navigate by creating a HTML website.

Examples of areas in which the site excels in accessibility:

Descriptive alt tags bring the images and collection alive for screen reader users and users with low vision.

The Financial Statements are properly marked up as HTML Tables allowing assistive technologies use this information to provide context to users.

Resizable text and the ability to zoom in on-page elements make it easier for users with visual limitation to read the content.

Image carousels are avoided as they can be difficult for screen readers users to operate.
